Churchill Downs and NBC Sports announce partnership

It was recently anounced that Churchill Downs, Inc., and NBC Sports are collaborating to present six of the most significant graded stakes races for three-year-olds leading up to the Kentucky Derby on May 1st. This will take place over three broadcasts, and the races are the Lane’s End and the Louisiana Derby on 3-27; the Santa Anita Derby and the Wood Memorial on 4-2; and the Blue Grass Stakes and Arkansas Derby on 4-10.

It is really gratifying to see business partnerships that further the sport of horse racing, and as a lifelong fan, the end result is that I get to see more of the top races on national television. As casino gambling has become more ubiquitous around the country, horse racing has faced new challenges for their market share, but from my perspective going to the races and watching these amazing athletes in action is an entirely diferent experience than going to a casino. A day at the track is something that the entire family can enjoy, and though making a wager can make it more fun for some people, it is an enjoyable outing even if you just kick back with an iced cold beverage and some great food and soak in the sights and sounds at one of the venerable tracks around the country.

Many people don’t recognize the path that leads to the Triple Crown races, and this partnerhsip will enable viewers to get more of a feel for the events that precede the big three. If you watch these races on NBC, you will already know the cast of characters pretty well by the time Kentucky Derby day is upon us on May 1st, 2010.

Kudos to Churchill Downs and NBC Sports, and I can guarantee you that I will be glued to the set as the Triple Crown races unfold.

Sports News For 1/29/10

NFL NEWS

It’s official Kurt Warner QB for the Arizona Cardinals has just retired after 12 great years in the NFL. Warner was always one of the top professional NFL players on and off the field and spent a lot of his time during the off-season helping out with different charities. During his career Warner won two MVP awards, went to the Pro bowl 5 times and won the Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams early in his career. Even though he had 2 years and $23 million left on his contract, he felt this was the perfect time for him to walk away from the game.

The Cincinnati Bengals rookie LB Rey Maualuga has been arrested for DUI after he hit a parking meter and 2 park cars early this morning. But after learning about this the only thing that has me puzzled since athletes get DUI all the time is why is he still driving a 2003 Pontiac.

This Sunday night is the 2009-10 NFL Pro Bowl that will be held in Miami instead of the usually place Hawaii. Another difference is that this year’s game is the week before the Super Bowl instead of after, which makes all the players in the Super Bowl that made it to the Pro Bowl not eligible. But because the rule states that even if you cant play in the Pro Bowl if you made the team you must make an appearance which has angered many Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints players that have to miss their teams flight in order to fulfill their duties under league rules.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS

The weekend the top seniors in college football will suit up for the North and South and battle it out in this year Senior Bowl. While there is a lot of marquee players in the game the most hyped up player competing is Florida Gators QB Tim Tebow. Tebow won many accolades during his tenure at Florida but many experts predict that he will not make a good QB in the NFL. Many feel he has a better chance as a tight end due to his lack of arm strength that is needed to succeed in the NFL. However Tebow plans on proving people wrong this weekend in front of every NFL scout that thinks he should look at playing another position. Just to make things worst Tebow was diagnosed with streap throat this week and was running a 103-degree temperature on Wednesday.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN NEWS

While in the beginning the match up seemed like Joe-Wilfried Tsonga had a chance but quickly we all realized that he was no match for Roger Federer who cruised to a 6-2,6-3,6-2 win today to advance to the finals. Federer will meet up with Andy Murray in the finals on Sunday.

Once again on the women’s double side the Williams sisters Serena and Venus have won their 4th doubles final at the Australian Open. On top of that Serena is also headed to the singles final against Justine Henin on Saturday.

Choosing the Turf For Your Business – Why Artificial Turf Is Great For Sports

Do you have a brick-and-mortar business? If the answer is yes, then you’ve probably got a lot on your plate. That said, you also have to think about your business from many angles; one of the things you have to think about is the appearance of your business and the safety of your customers while they are on your property. On that note, everyone knows that clean, well-manicured grounds are a bonus for business, but what about maintenance? Sports fields, including golf courses, are very expensive to maintain as it is. When they have regular grass, the maintenance costs really sky rocket. By far the best solution for businesses that need the benefits of grass or attractive turf, is an artificial version of what same material.

But why should you settle for an artificial turf? Are you, in fact, settling?
In reality, artificial turf is easier to maintain and safer for everyone who is using it. Why is this? One of the ways to understand the benefits of artificial turf is to look a t the composition of artificial turf.

The following list shows the level composition of every synthetic grass group installed in the ground:

(a)    Grass fiber: this is the top most layer, the actual synthetic green grass

(b)    Granulated Rubber: this layer allows the light penetrate in the set up while giving the entire grass ground a soft feel that makes it easier to walk around in.

(c)    Rounded Silica Sand: the silica sand stands as the synthetic soil which is again rounded to contribute to the soft feel of the entire setup making it homier for kids to play in.

(d)    Duraflo ™ Backing System: the backing system stands as a mid-ground connection between the substances contained in the upper and lower ground.

(e)    Levelling layer: the levelling layer allows the water to penetrate through the drainage zone and allow a lengthened stay in the set up to reduce the constant need for water.

(f)    Drainage Zone: the drainage zone releases the water after it is used for the most time needed for the set up to be fed the water it needs to stay robust.

(g)    Geotextile: the textile makes it easier for the nutrients from the compost ground to penetrate the upper level of the set up and provide the entire grass with the mineral nutrients it needs from the actual ground to be able to remain its rich green color.

(h)    Natural Subgrade (Compost): This is the soil-like ground level of the entire set-up; from here comes the natural nutrients needed to make the synthetic grass appear as natural as it should be.

With these layers present in the set up, it could be seen how much safer it is for people to use the artificial turf, whether it’s simply a turf they’re walking on or they happen to be playing sports of some kind. The rubber base of the upper synthetic green grass layer makes it a safer surface for all variety of activities.

Besides that, it could also be noted how important it is to manage the entire setup with minimal time. With real grass, maintaining it would take time and lot of water, whereas with the synthetic setup, the maintenance needed is minimal giving you more time to give attention to more important issues of your business.

So what types of turf can you get?
At National Green, we offer Fresh Cut 67 and 107, with monofilament or dual-filament (67 versus 107), a polyethylene finish, sand filling, and urethane backing.

For a very high quality natural feel, we also offer Classic 36, Realistic, Saw Grass, Turf Lawn 26, True Grass XL42, True Grass XL24, Sod Grass, and Classic 48. Sports Betting: Game of the day – Arkansas State at UL Monroe

Sports Betting Line movement for Game of the day – Arkansas State at UL Monroe

Sports Betting Odds makers opened this game as a pick ‘em but the Red Wolves have been bet up to -2.

Sports Betting Measuring Sticks For Today’s Game:

ASU – picked to finish second in the sub belt this season – is just 1-3, but its losses have come against Nebraska, Troy and Iowa. The Hawkeyes narrowly held off the Red Wolves, 24-21, 10 days ago.

Arkansas State ranks 48th in the country in rushing, 98th in passing, 46th in offensive scoring, 81st in total offense and is tied for 18th inside the red zone.

The ASU pass defense is its Achilles heel, ranking 107th in the country, allowing 266.5 yards per game. They have yielded 1027 yards on 82-for-117 and nine touchdowns over the last three games.

Monroe has a chance to improve to 3-0 in Sun Belt play, which would be big considering the team was picked to finish seventh in the league.

The Warhawks bring a double-deuce offense into this contest, averaging 208.6 yards rushing and 210 passing. They are averaging 37 points per game in Sun Belt play. ULM leads the Sun Belt in scoring and tallied 577 yards of offense against FIU in its last game.

Weather Update:

Warm temperatures in the mid to upper 60s, under cloudy skies, are expected at kickoff. Showers and thunderstorms are likely with an 80 percent chance of rain. Southeast winds around 5 mph.

Player Profiles:

Arkansas State senior QB Corey Leonard was 22-for-40 for 216 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the three-point loss at Iowa.

It prompted Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz to comment, “That quarterback is their catalyst, Leonard is a heck of a football player.” Leonard has 44 career touchdown passes, leaving him just five shy of the school record.

ASU RB Reggie Arnold is bidding to become only the eighth 1-A player ever with four straight 1,000-yard seasons. Arnold has only had 74 yards on 22 carries the past two games and needs to produce more than that to balance his team’s offense. He is still on pace for 1132 yards in the 12-game schedule.

Warhawks’ defensive end Alex Carrington, the preseason defensive player of the year in the Sun Belt, has just 11 tackles in four games, including a single sack.

ULM’s running game has improved vastly and QB Trey Revell is playing with a lot of confidence. The junior has thrown for more than 1,000 yards and four touchdowns, and has rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns.  His running ability adds another dimension to the offense that features strong skill players. Equally impressive is the fact ULM has given up just five sacks this season.

Junior RB Frank Goodin leads ULM with 461 yards rushing and eight touchdowns while senior WR Darrell McNeal leads ULM with 22 receptions and four touchdowns.

Coach’s chorus

ULM coach Charlie Weatherbie on tonight’s game: “It’s always been a very close football game, it seems. I’m not sure there has ever been a blowout one way or the other. I would expect no different in this ballgame. I think both teams are very evenly matched athletically and I compliment Arkansas State on how they played Iowa. I thought they played very, very well and had a chance to win the game.”

Weatherbie went on to elaborate, “It’s a very big game for us. It’s step No. 3 in the Sun Belt race. It’s going to be one of those games that comes down to who executes the best and whose fundamentals are better.”

The Bottom Line For This Game:

Monroe is 2-2 SU and 4-0 ATS the last four meetings in this series, with the home team winning all four contests.

ASU is 12-2 ATS in games off back-to-back losses. Check out sports betting community for more information.

Well….I’m so amusing….interested in watching sports videos & studying news articles, staring at awesome pics, sharing sports news.

Online Sports Betting Secrets: Bet Against Lousy Teams!

Sports betting experts often make their picks by betting against a certain team, instead of necessarily betting for the team they think is going to win. In other words, sometimes when you know a team is terrible, you can make money sports betting just by betting against the terrible team.

Here’s a perfect example. Take a look at my analysis of the Southern Miss vs. Memphis NCAA college football game:

Southern Miss -7 at Memphis

This game matches up Southern Miss, 4-4 SU, against a very bad Memphis team that’s gone 1-7 this season, with their only win coming against an equally bad Chattanooga team way back in week 2. That puts Memphis in the middle of a 6 game losing streak, while Southern Miss isn’t doing much better, losing 3 of their last four.

But here’s the key to this game. Southern Miss simply can’t move the ball when they’re over-matched. In their 4 losses they’ve scored only 7,6,6, and 17 points. However, when they’re playing teams they can push around, they have the offense to put points on the board. In their 4 wins, Southern Miss has scored 45, 37, 31, and 19 points.

Meanwhile, Memphis has given up over 35 points in 5 of their last 6 games, and 26 in their game against Arkansas St. This tells me that Southern Miss is likely to put up a lot of points tonight.

Look for Southern Miss to simply over-power Memphis and put up a lot of points tonight, while holding Memphis’ offense to under 20 points. Bottom line is that I would expect Southern Miss to win this win going away, 31-17, easily covering the 7 point line.

So what was the final score? Southern Miss won 42-21, easily beating the 7 point spread.

How much money do you think sports betting pros made on this game simply by recognizing how bad a team Memphis was?

There’s often no need to try to figure out who’s going to win the close match-ups. People who aren’t good at sports betting often get suckered into trying to figure out who’s going to win tight games, like the Super Bowl.

When you bet on a game where you know one team is terrible, you already know that the better team is going to win -it’s just by a matter of how much they’ll win by.
