When the college was founded in 1871, the site in Fayetteville was described as “2nd to none in the state of Arkansas.” The school is the major land-grant university and the state university for Arkansas. The college came was established under the Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862. This act demanded that federal land sales provide funds for new colleges devoted to “agriculture and the mechanic arts,” “scientific and classical studies,” and “military tactics” for the “liberal and practical education of the industrial classes.” The university has provided that education ever since. The athletic teams of the University of Arkansas are nick-named the Razorbacks. They are sometimes affectionately called the Hogs. The university has the most dominating track and filed team in the history of college sports The basketball program was named one of the top 10 NCAA programs of all time under 800 game winning former head coach Eddie Sutton. Since joining the SEC the Razorbacks have developed a rivalry with the Louisiana State University football program. The game between these teams takes place at the end of the season and has decided the Western Division Championship several times. The winner of this game takes home the ”Golden Boot” trophy. The Boot is a gold trophy in the shape of the two states. Arkansas last took the Boot home in 2007 with a 50–48 win over the top ranked Tigers. This was their first win over LSU since 2002. The two schools have also built a rivalry in baseball. In 2001, despite coming into the series in last place in the division, Arkansas took a three-game sweep of top-ranked LSU. In basketball, the main rival of the Razorbacks has traditionally been the Wildcats of Kentucky. This rivalry developed when both teams were competing for a national championship on an annual basis.
